Why does my game keep crashing?

The default versions of GMod 9.0.4 b and c are really unstable nowadays
- Download and install the fixed repack
Even with the repack, GMod 9 is really picky about video settings:
- Immediately restart your game after changing any video settings
- Do not change your video settings mid-game
- Playing in fullscreen will crash your game when you hit ALT+TAB
- Play in windowed mode and don't minimize the game
Error “Your map differs from the server's.” when trying to join a server
- Delete the map that you are trying to join from your maps folder
- The game will automatically redownload the map upon rejoining
